EAST FORTUNE SPRINT DUATHLON – the updated version

23/03/25 – Ever wondered what age I am? It was written on my calf today for the https://municion.org/zw1ro0jh5 Triathlon Works East Fortune sprint Duathlon (5km run, 20km aka 9 laps bike, 2.5km run). This was also both the British Triathlon champs and Triathlon Scotland champs plus European champs qualifier. So a big important race! This is my third time doing this race, each time I say I’m not doing it again and then something happens and I seem to sign myself up. It is actually a great race and it is closed roads, contains laps which means it is spectator friendly and is simply just a good race and well run.

https://ottawaphotographer.com/763s1jn0 Given my legs have been focused on long distance in preparation for Cape Wrath this short distance was a shock. Big wake up to make sure they’d move. I’ve also not really been out on the bike, with most bike time spent on Zwift. I had no idea how I’d get on so just went for it.

First up 5km run. It was fast and the speedy youngsters at the front were on fire. I kept looking at everyone’s calves to see if they were in the same category as me. I only cared about those in the ‘45’ group. Run was ok and straight into transition, my usual struggle with my helmet due to my dodgy hands that don’t work. I really need to change my helmet clip for an easier one or apply for my exemption so I can get help. Managed it and out for the 9 laps. Aim was not to miss count. It was a headwind up one side and a lovely sunny tailwind down the other. Being a draft legal race I aimed to get onto someone’s wheel but for me the field was spread out so didn’t get as much drafting as I’d have liked. Off the bike and back out for run 2. By now the men’s race had just started so it was running with them whilst also hunting down another ‘45’. Legs felt like jelly off the bike but seemed to work. I crossed the line in 1hr 12. Pleased with that. It was getting cold so quick change to keep warm. There was a poor bumble bee suffering in the tent. I had one cube of Voom Nutrition bar left. I sat it next to the bee and it climbed on top. Voom to the rescue.

I wasn’t sure where I’d finished so stayed to prize giving as friends had won. Turns out I was 4th in the British Champs (classed as first loser in my house so no medal) but 2nd in Scottish Champs and automatic qualification to the Euro Champs 2026. I’ll take that. What a fab day!

It was my first Duathlon of the year, first draft legal, first on a race track and first technically being a student (yes, with my crazy busy life I’ve added in doing a degree in business management Heriot-Watt.)

This was a sprint distance with 2 run laps, 9 bike laps then 1 run lap. All I can say is ‘the headwind!!!!’ On the bike I could hit over 40kmph but on the other side I was averaging 19kmph. I was hoping to get to draft but unfortunately the only group that were drafting snuck up behind me and zoomed past. After a few expletives trying to workout where they came from I tried to get onto their back wheels but no such luck.

https://yourartbeat.net/2025/03/11/wr5lah0b I worked as hard as I could and managed to come in 8th overall, 3rd veteran and 3rd student. Homework is to work on cycling into wind.
