11/06/23 – Today it was Lochore sprint triathlon. 750m swim, 20km bike, 5km run. I had to face my fear…open water swimming. This was my first open water triathlon (all others have been in the pool) and with Celtman solo only a few weeks away this was the test run at it. Mary has been great at dragging me to Abies so I have been practicing but this was the real thing!
Race brief came through during the week and I was so glad to see that boots were allowed for the swim. My aim was to keep it as real as possible for Celtman. Driving through the rain started. Luckily it dried up for the race but as soon as we were finished the heavens opened.
Bikes racked, wet suit on, body glide on (helps get wetsuit off) and down to the start. Eek…water is cold. Go…everyone runs in, I take my time as I don’t want to panic. Eventually get into a routine of 4/2/2 breathing, round both buoys and back towards the flags. I seems to be going a bit squint but eventually make it (watch says 882m but I didn’t go that much off course). Phew swim done, I wasn’t last out and onto bike.
Bike course was good. I managed to start working my way back up the field. Even managed to time the temporary traffic lights well. Straight into transition, trainers on and now for my favourite bit. More moving up the field and I now felt comfortable and in a routine. Even managed a wee sprint finish.
Dry clothes on and a cuppa. I’m happy, I survived the swim and it wasn’t as bad as I thought. Bring on 2.2km open water sea swim with jellyfish in 2weeks!
