https://www.fogliandpartners.com/cp3r2dyq 16/02/25 – Race write up for the Glentress trail marathon by High Terrain Events. The race that didn’t quite go to plan. I hadn’t trained for this and aim was to use it as a training run for Cape Wrath. As such, I brought the family with me for a break too. The race was on Sunday so we headed down on Friday to do a wee bit of exploring round Peebles. We were staying at the McDonald Cardrona hotel so managed a small leg stretch on Saturday round Cardrona woods. When I reached the woods I realised why it look vaguely familiar, it forms part of the Tweed Valley ultra. This time I got to run it much more slowly and actually see it. Given it was only a leg stretch I didn’t go too far but looked like lots of good trails to play on. Afternoon explore to find the Map of Scotland that was made by the Polish, wander about Peebles then a sauna/steam room session before pasta for dinner. Perfect prep.

Due to the recent storms the route was slightly changed to make a little bit hillier (thanks). The route was 2 laps round Glentress bike trails so got to pretend I was a bike on the runs I could never possibly do on a bike.

That woke my legs up. What goes up must come down so onto forestry tracks and into winding downhills where I used my love of downhills to gain some places. But what goes down goes up again and this appeared to be a common theme. Through stunning woods, beautiful forestry trails, switchbacks that kept going and eventually to the summit with snow. At this point I realised my shoes didn’t quite have the right grip for snow so got a bit slippy. The downhills came but they threw in the ‘Evil Climb’ and it definitely was. Finally was about 3.5km of fast downhill back to the start and then time to repeat. I grabbed some coke, fig rolls and shortbread to scoff and left the checkpoint aka the start/finish/mid point. Lap two was harder and legs were feeling the burn. It did mean that I knew what was coming so a bit more enjoyable.
https://www.mdifitness.com/rsjy009gx7 By now I knew that the training run was out the window. I was in 2nd place and I was going to keep that position. 1st place was far too fast and never going to catch her. It meant I had to just keep on pushing. I did and crossed the line in 4:39hrs. Hug from the eldest who also reminded me I was 1st loser, well done from hubby and youngest had given up and gone to the van so didn’t even see me finish and was raging she was going to need to wait for prize giving now. Got to love family. Loved my prize and even better that two v40 females made the podium. Us oldies are still smashing it (although the youngster won).
