19/05/23 – Scurry to Cramond Island is a race I didn’t think I’d make the start line for at lunchtime. Day started off well and was on the 0930 train from London Euston to Glasgow planning to get in at 1400hrs. By late morning the train had terminated at Preston due to a broken down freight train with no trains going north. It was after 1500hrs when I eventually got on a Glasgow service. Unfortunately this one terminated early too and I found myself stuck at Carlisle at 1600hrs. Option was wait another hour or jump on the train to Edinburgh and work it out from there.
Suddenly it’s 1700hrs and I get thinking. I’m actually going to be in Edinburgh for 1800hrs. Race starts 1845hrs, I have some smelly kit in my bag, my work trainers on my feet, I could actually do the race. Some frantic train times checked to see if I could get a connecting train to Edinburgh park (I could) and my first ever Uber booked. I made the start line!!!!
Still full of adrenaline and off we went. Along the prom then tight left through the woods, open ground, back down then across the causeway to Cramond island. This was slippy and I had non existent grip. Aim was to stay upright. Onto the beach, up the hill to the piper, quick run round the island then return.
Given I’d done a 55miler last Saturday I didn’t know what the legs had in them but they gave it everything. I crossed the finish (forgot to stop my watch) and came in as 2nd female. How did that happen?!? Now to workout how to get home. Luckily a lovely fellow runner gave me a lift back to Glasgow and I eventually got in the door at 2100hrs.
Thank you Scurry Events for a fab event, I’d recommend it to everyone.
